Image for Windows by TeraByte Unlimited Screenshot Image for Windows Screenshot

Image is a backup and restore utility that creates a snapshot of an entire partition or volume to a set of files or directly to most DVD+RW or CD-R/RW drives. If something should ever happen to that partition or volume, you'll be able to simply restore the snapshot image.

I've been using this for about two years and it has never let me down. Contrary to one comment I read here, the user CAN restore just one file or a group of files. I do it all the time.

To extend my review. My mistake for thinking that TBIView was only for viewing image files. In my opinion file restoration should be included in the main program. Secondly a heads up for anyone using partitions encrypted with Truecrypt or Diskcryptor (may also be affected by other encryption software). Image for window seems unable to compress these partitions and can only create raw images. Also the TBIView utility wont recognize these images as valid so you wont be able to restore specific files but need to restore the whole image. So for encypted drives Trueimage or Exact Image will do a better job. Otherwise this software seems reliable and does what it's supposed to.

The difference between IFW and its competitors, when imaging encrypted data, is that IFW sees the disk at a lower level; it sees the actual, encrypted disk content. Encrypted data is incompressible by its very nature. And if an entire volume is compressed, it is impossible to tell where files begin and end (and even impossible to tell what kind of file system is in use), thus the need to backup the entire volume--i.e. to use "raw mode". The authors of TrueCrypt advise against backing up the way the other imaging utilities do. This is mentioned in the documentation. There is a way to backup encrypted data using IFW the same way you can with the other utilities. Currently, though, doing so is not officially supported by TeraByte. And if the encrypted volume in question is the one Windows is installed on, you do NOT want to back it up in anything other than raw mode.

"These "reviews" are actually ads" I have to agree. Something is just not right here. Many reviews looks more like ads than actual reviews.

Huh? I'm sure you're not talking about my reviews. It doesn't take much browsing here to find that I have many, many comments and reviews on software. This is just one of them. Just because some people aren't nitwits doesn't make them marketers.

"Works great. I use it daily." It is easy to use to make image backups of server and workstations. Some of the options could be worded more clearly. Updated on Oct 29, 2009

DkDude swears up and down that I am Jeremy Collake, because I post positive reviews for Process Lasso. I must be a miracle man, assuming many different developer identities and whipping out a slew of software titles!

"Easy To Use - Creates Reliable Backups" The images produced can be viewed and individual folders or files extracted using an explorer like interface. Image of my kingston data traveller was not possible with my previous well known backup software, but is easy peasy with IFW! Not a lot, except do not rename the images after you have produced them - renaming makes them useless - they are not recognised by IFW or ISOBuster

Fast, Efficient, Inexpensive, and Easy to Use. If you have a smaller area to restore to, the data within the partition must fit, even if the amount of data would fit. This isn't a problem for me since I'll be restoring to the existing drive or larger one. Wish I would have found this software before waisting my time on the over hyped drive imaging utilities. I've tried at least 8 different drive imaging packages from free ones to expensive ones and this one has them all beat in my book. I've lost faith in the fake Internet review sites and media robots that recommend the same stuff. You've got to figure things out yourself and this is one you've got to try! They even have tutorials at the website that my grandma could follow.

"Most RELIABLE Imaging Solution" This is honestly one of the best imaging solutions out there. I have wasted my money on acronis and tried many other solutions however nothing matches the the reliability, support, and value Terabyte offers. -Image for Dos is pretty pointless. Use Image for linux recovery for restores instead, (comes free with purchase) which is much faster and also offers better hardware and full network/wireless support. Very reliable product, lightweight, and great support. Works on Windows 7 out of box minor bug fixes free of charge! Best imaging solution out there!!!

Fast, reliable Basic UI, The DOS and Linux (my preference) versions are backup whole partitions only. The DOS version is slow. I prefer the Linux version. Purchase brings all 3 versions-DOS, Windows and Linux. The Linux version is a "LiveCD" Boot it, enter the code, remove the "Live CD", insert a DVD and select the partition. Supports full and incremental backup, various error checking schemes. I haven't used the Windows version for a few years. It seems like a good idea when backing up a partition to not have it active. With the Linux version of Image, the partition being backed up is not in use. I've backed up and restored a number of partitions when installing new hard drives. They've always been 100%.

Easy to use interface, fast performance, reliable backups, superior customer service. I really can not think of any. Maybe that their 'PHYlock' program (that locks a running machine and renders it available to be imaged) is a bit finicky at first but ends up doing the job fine. After coming close to buying the latest version of Symantec Ghost (I had used Ghost 5 to 7 years ago with no complaint so it was my goto program when I needed to create images), and realizing the many flaws within the new software, I set out to find a reliable imagining software package to replace Ghost. My journey ended (and yours will too) when I came across Image for Windows. And at half the price of Ghost it was a definite purchase! By recommendation I tested Macrium's Reflect and Drive Image XML. Both programs ran smoothly for creating images but the problem was in restoring them. Macrium came with a bootable cd image you could burn with Linux on it, but when I actually booted to it the software ran incredibly slow and then crashed. This actually led to me trying to create my own bootable DSL disc and wasting several hours before I threw in the towel. Drive Image XML offered over LAN restore but it was slower than all get out. Image for Windows came with a bootable cd iso that worked flawlessly and pretty quick too. I had slight issue with the 'PHYlock' program stopping my server so that it could capture the image. So I sent an email to TeraByte Unlimited's support and they responded with the hour addressing my issue. Though I ended up getting it to run before they got back to me. They also replied promptly on 1 other issue I had. Their support service was prompt and extremely helpful. Two thumbs up for TeraByte! At any rate, I eventually got my image backup and restore to go off with out a hitch. I would seriously recommend you at least trying this product if you have any imaging needs. It worked gloriously were others failed. And it is cheap too! What more could you ask for?

Powerful and flexible, Backup to USB, Network, CD or DVD. Software's design is efficient. Unlike most modern software, it runs from a floppy or a 386 and doesn't consume hundreds of megabytes of disk space. This is not an out-of-the-box do-all, like most other software claims. It is more like a set of tools. If you can afford the time to understand how they work, you can end up with a far more secure, reliable, and flexible Backup and Imaging system. It is small and fast; unlike other super-polished and bloat-ware products (e.g., Acronis TrueImage, SYMANTEC DriveImage 8+ etc.).Very flexible. Backup to external USB and FireWire drives, to internal or network drives, and even directly to CD or DVD. Even backup Windows while using it. Highly reliable. The software is in continuous development. In addition to the basic programs (all available as full-function 30-day trials), there are dozens of free add-ons to customize and increase the functionality. Has plug-ins for Bart PE.Just needs a little technical knowledge to get it's full use. As mentioned, if you can afford the time to understand the software, you will end up with an excellent Backup and Imaging system. However, you must have (or be willing to acquire), a basic to intermediate knowledge of file systems and partitioning to get the value out of this. Not really recommended for brand new computer users, unless they're willing to spend some time learning the software. The learning curve is not as bad as PhotoShop, but expect to spend about a week reading and understanding the principles of partitioning and imaging so that you can use the program features to your benefit. If you want to do something complicated, then expect it to be complicated. There are no shortcuts if you want reliability. Tip: If you do decide to buy it, don't use a Download Manager to download the purchased files. The constant pause and resume will use up the server's download counter and get locked out (until you e-mail them - found out the ha

I've used this for 4 or 5 years now, and have no hesitation giving it 5 stars. It does what it says on the tin.

IFW is the first and only program I have found in the last 5 years that can make a clean image of a DOS and WFW 3.11 partition and let me restore it to another computer. None at all Don't even think of buying another Image program. The interface is very intuitive and clear in the instructions. I had a couple of questions and Technical Support was quick to respond with the correct answer.

Nothing at all. Wasted mega manhours of my time.. I like nothing about this product. Instructions and programs were techy and confusing to me. The instructions were unusable for me - lots of geek words that can have several meanings. Tech support was essentially useless to me - I would email them and ask for detailed instructions about how to accomplish something, and in return I would get a reply of one or two short sentences from "David" that did not hellp me at all. All I wanted to accomplish was to completely clone/image my primary hard drive so that if it crashed I could run the image onto a new blank drive. All I succeeded in doing was completely wiping out my primary drive, and making it useless - it would not then permit me to reload the original system recovery disc onto it! Lost everything. I threw IFW away - I myself would not touch it again. (My brother went with TR 7 Pro imaging software, and loves it.) A.

It images a dual boot XP - OpenSuse 11.3 system using the boot CD with setting 2 parameters - Backup unused sectors & Ignore I/O errors. It captures both Mbr's on the hard drive and upon restore computer boots up as if it was original build media. The interface is menu driven and has to use keyboard to move around (No Mouse Functions) in the program which is not big deal. This is the first paid program that images a dual boot computer and restore as if it was the original build. This is the program that everyone should have if they have a dual boot computer. No others that I have seen on the market works as well as Image For Windows. There is also a version of this program for DOS and Linux and does not have to be installed in windows but works off a easy build boot CD. Images made on either version can be use between all versions of this software.
