Wow! I used PSPad for the most editing tasks but now I have a new favourite. RJ TextEd has an amazing functionality and usability and it's a real freeware, no ads or nags. Very powerfull application with good syntax highlighting support.

Yeah, and it's almost 8Mb in size too. 3 stars until it gets under 2Mb. Programmers need to learn how to code.

Has an excellent interface.File manager-great idea.Ease of use.List of file types supported is impressive.Program supports syntax highlighting. I can't think about any feature that I would like to see here.

This is quite a nice editor, especially for being freeware. To the previous poster: The size is because of the language it is written in and all the dependencies it relies on. I don't foresee it ever decreasing in size. That said, I have no problem with its size.

I agree with frodo888. I also used PSPad for quite some time but got frustrated because it just seemed to go nowhere in development. I love the fresh look and cool ideas for a basic text editor that is Free! I just wish it had a check mark to set a basic setting for newbies so that when I place it on someone's computer that is not very knowledgeable, I don't have try to make it just a simple editor of just txt documents. Even so, I am not completely successful at this yet as some settings were not available to modify in the last final. I hope to try this one soon and look forward to the changes. Please keep this up and I know you will be software of the year in no time, as no really good ultra modern plain text editor has been made that is anywhere as good in quite some time.

This is an amazing editor. There is also a portable version. It has a browser and a dual-pane file explorer built-in, skins, gui downloadable spell dictionaries for something like 50 languages, custom tool support, as well as multiple browser support. Not as fast as akelpad for sure but it's really in it's own league. Does way more than I could ever ask for. With all the dictionaries incl. the portable version runs 140MB's. And it's not that difficult to make it open a blank text, or other I suppose, document at every start.

I left the ini file as is but overwrote all else in the portable and it seems to keep it's settings. openssl could use an update I believe and for some reason my only gripe is the lack of full screen ability, not even a hotkey?

Great editor. Keep up the good work. I'm glad to see a good freeware editor under active development.

I really like this editor. Another is Editra, OS, very nice as well.

Very good editor. However, there are a couple of features that IMO put PSPad above this one: - Color selector / Color Translator (PSPad has them, I couldn't find them in RJ TextEd) - File comparison (in PSPad it's built-in whereas in RJ TextEd you have to use an external program, Winmerge) If it wasn't for those two features, I'd probably use this one instead of PSPad.

Context menu always worked. It's file associations that never have & still don't.

Hate this... after RJ has been installed on Win7 - the right click on my computer - management stop working... ContextMenuHandler of RJ has broke the system functionality.

I removed the context dialog last release (it came back after this update) and replaced the 'converter' with convertall. Word wrap is still wanky. Words are cut at random points in the middle of the word. Other than that the best nfo reader & then some. I don't use winmerge, I use diffuse http://diffuse.sourceforge.net/

It looks like it could be good but it has horrific crashes when opening files randomly. I disable as much auto stuff as I can in the app, but it still does it.

imho this programme is very buggy and still in need of a lot of work. I'll stick with Notepad++ for now thanks.

This is the best freeware code and general text editor around. The author is very active fixing issues, improving the application and listens to all suggestions. The editor is highly functional and a pleasure to use. I can't think of any negitives. Compared to it's competition: Notepad++: Menus are a mess and many plugins don't work with the current version or Unicode. PSPad: Not quite as nice to use as RJ and development of the product is slow or has stopped.

Fast, efficient, supports lots of programming languages and the ones it doesn't support out-of-the-box can be imported from UltraEditor's wordfiles and converted to the Texted format. Some of the code folding for programming languages is a little hard to get working without a lot of manual effort with the syntax editor. I use it for editing scripts and programs I'm writing and it has all the features I need. I was using Programmer's Notepad prior to this, but the syntax files (schemes) are impossible to edit and make work. This has a syntax editor built in, and although it's not completely simple to use, with enough effort, you can figure it out pretty quickly. This program also has a portable version that doesn't need to be installed, and the configuration files are 100% compatible with the installable version so you can take your settings with you. It is updated on a regular basis (as of when I wrote this) and the author is very accessible and friendly to suggestions and comments on his site's forums. I don't think you'll find an easier, friendlier, or feature rich text editor especially for free. You won't go wrong giving this one a try.

This program is more powerful than I may ever know. I would like to be able to load rss type links from the sidebar without making them IE 'favorites'. I just haven't quite figured it out. At least the other browser option was finally fixed. The best nfo reader hands down imo. If the program would simply allow dragNdrop from the sidebar to the address line that would do it, but It does not work that way. I know it's an editor but the possibilities are huge.

-"convenient" interface-functional ftp-client-excellent support of project management-support of all ANSI and UNICODE I haven't found I am very surprised that this product is free. I used commercial editor PHPDesigner but when I have found this editor - have refused using all other products. It is really best editor.
