WinVer 0.95.29

WinVer by Javier Gutiérrez Chamorro (Guti) Screenshot WinVer Screenshot

WinVer is a simple replacement of the WinVer tool included in Windows operating system. It performs the same job as the original, but is highly optimized in size, being almost 10 times smaller. There are no external dependencies needed.

Perhaps a 1KB program might prod you to investigate what else he might have on his website. Never know, might find something useful :-).

Does what it says, but in reality it is an irrelevant program. Not like it displays anything different than the Windows version. As for the being 10 times smaller, it is no longer 1976, disk space is not an issue (winver on my XP machine is 5.5 KB). And now you might say about dependencies, etc, for flash drive use, however I can write a batch file that you can use from a flash drive that will open winver on the machine. Gave it a 4 because it does what it says, but essentially it is totally worthless.

The artist said it well. This is excellent, useless software.

We have one of those freakish jewels of the internet here! "I needed this so much... I've wanted for so long to see my windows version without consuming so many resources!" - What? "And its ten times smaller than the original size of whooping 10 kbs!" - What?! I have to give you that you code efficiently... now 'would you kindly' rewrite the rest of the operative system? ...Please?

Simple tool, and maybe useless, but compact. In my Vista SP1 x86, while regular Winver, needs 1448 K of memory, this uses 1432. Not a big deal here. Acording to disk space, original one is 8704 bytes, and this is only 1024. Huge difference here! Original source code in assembly is available for download also at http://guti.webcindario.com/static.php?page=WinVer

It may be much smaller, but it takes slightly more memory to run according to process explorer. Does what it says, otherwise still pretty silly.

Giving it a 5 because it does it's excellent work for what it does, (whether or not you have a use for a software doesn't have any regard to whether it's good or performs well, or anything really do the ignorant poster below me, rating it as a 1 was just stupid)

Completely pointless program. Its programmer should use his knowledge to make something real.

Very small. And with 2 or 1 g standard RAM these days...why do we care about memory usage..and that too about an application which doesn't stay on in the taskbar or the tray... All said and done...what is the point of this ? Also...I downloaded Xplorer from the Author's site and when I tried to execute it, McAfee deleted it by identifying it as a Trojan : Generic.dx... I tried to get the author's email id but not been able to... if the author can give his email id, I will send him the screen shot.

This program is NOT POINTLESS. I think it makes it's point very well. Microsoft's coders suck at their jobs.
