Google Desktop by Google Screenshot Google Desktop Screenshot

Google Desktop gives you easy access to information on your computer and from the web. It's a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, music, photos, chats and web pages that you've viewed. By making your computer searchable, Google Desktop puts your information easily within your reach and frees you from having to manually organize your files, emails and bookmarks. It makes searching your computer as easy as searching the web with Google. Google Desktop doesn't just help you search your computer; it also helps you gather new information from the web with Sidebar, a new desktop feature that shows you your new email, weather and stock information, personalized news and RSS/Atom feeds, and more. Sidebar is personalized automatically, without any manual configuration required.

Simple, small, and free, Google Desktop indexes hard drive like Google's servers index Web. Search results are returned in Web-page format (Web links). The application's sidebar regularly updates status of your OTHER life details, via widgets & such. For those that MAY need more/greater details; MIGHT want to look @ other programs/tools. Simple, small, and free, sidebar will put MUCH needed data @ a glance

None that I can think of. Maybe it's my system, but if I run it, literally nothing happens. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, still nothing. I used to like it, but .......

Performs several functions in addition to it's main function as an indexer (which, I agree, works better than Windows own Search bar) and installed easily on my W7 64 bit laptop, and it's free. None at this point, but if you have a slow computer or internet connection it may slow you down even more. Very cool "pause indexing for 1 hour " option is what I use when I surf the web via DSL.. I didn't think I really needed an indexer, but being such a Google fanatic, I had to try it. Now I wouldn't be without it. It can be completely hidden, but I really like the sidebar for all the info it can provide (I use Wikipedia a lot) and the virtual plant that blossoms the more you water it blows me away - Google software has always struck me as being highly innovative and well-designed which is probably why I'm such a fan. Their best products are easy to use and have a solid, "built like a Swiss watch" quality to them; Google Desktop is no exception and if you haven't tried it out, I'd definitely recommend you do so. It does simple search well and reliably. Searches email well. However, it does not search PDFs for content at all. Given that this is where all my content is, its search function is rather limited indeed. PDF searches let this down.

Fast searches of my files and email. Easy to use interface Does not support Outlook 2010. Unfortunately, this is a fatal flaw for me. I am uninstalling and moving on. Not useful if you live out of MS Outlook
