avast! is an antivirus set that is able to detect the presence of viruses in computers. It has a powerful antivirus kernal that has a boot-time scan, improved resident protection, heuristic analysis for email, and a script blocker. The program works great as a on-demand and/or resident virus scanner. The skinable interface is easy to use for any user.

Updated to the new Avast! with the orange icon and updating the definitions are failing everytime from that point and virusdefinitions are outdated at this moment. What is wrong? Someone any idea? Key is until 1st of March 2010. Everything is more reliable and improved, rated it 5* but I have a major problem.. Edit: find it, WebRoot Firewall wasn't doiing his job proberly. Updating definitions working and renew license is now improved. Fill in the form in the scanner and directly on the fly its extended to one new year! Although Avira Free is the winner concerning quick virusdef.updates and safety against new unknown virusses with no removal answer yet and hardly no false positives. Avast Free is more reliable to use and Avira Free edition pops up every update with the go Premium venster and is one Personal License only. I have one pc on Avira and 2 with Avast cause of this.

It's the best out there None its the best An A-list antivirus, Avast Professional 5 provides steadfast protection and a robust selection of features. This version is the paid upgrade of the better-known Avast Free, and includes several additional features. It doesn't have all of Avast's available features, and that last batch has been saved for another paid upgrade, Avast Internet Security. Avast Professional protects you with multiple guards. The antivirus, antispyware, and heuristics engines form a security core that also includes multiple real-time shields. The adjustable mail and file system shields join the pre-existing behavior, network, instant messaging, peer-to-peer (P2P), script, and Web shields. The behavioral shield is a common-sense feature, as security software publishers leverage their large user bases to detect threats early and warn others. Other new features include a silent/gaming mode, a testing sandbox, a firewall, antispam measures, and an "intelligent scanner".

Looks nice, but can't tell you more. No free trial despite listing one. Just got it, and it says my free trail expired on Feb 19th...ATM it is Feb 22! If they can't get that right, why would the rest of it be any better? Updated on Feb 24, 2010 Edit: I have a virius (common one from DLing items) that i've had before, I reconise the signs (it's one that does the fake anti-virius pop ups, saying it is the Vista Anti-Virus). I ran Avast! Twice, deep scan, DID NOT find it. I ran Malwarebytes ONCE and it found it. Avast is junk!

"Great product! Works very well and unobtrusive" I like that the program catches all viruses, spy ware, etc. I also appreciate it when the task tray icon speaks and tells me the antivirus files have been updated. So far, I can't find anytrhing to gripe about. As previously stated, I like that the program can find many, many viruses, spy ware, etc., and tells me when the files have been updated. I also like that it works in the background, and is very unobtrusive.

The only I found in it is the jazzy mp3 look and the noise it make...It feels very awkward and doesn't sound professional.

It is quiet, effective, and very unobtrusive. Other av software tend to be in your face, annoying, and take focus of the processor to remind you of things and tell you what they are up too. It tends to over book the hard drive when the system is in use, thus, in conjuction with other belligerant Windows service apps, can quickly use 100% of the hardrive resources for hours on end. I give this product a C- as it is windows based so 4 stars is pretty much the top score (think about it...). Considering I purchased it, and now have unistalled it and will likely never use it again, 3 stars is a high testament to its overall design, and most importantly, a strong indication that avast's major competitors are quite a bit worse (only based on my own experience mind you). Bottom line, you're better to go without this form of service all-to-gether and just use common sense behind a quality, router based firewall if consistent performace is needed.

Avast is signature based. Which means it has no heuristic scanning in the free version. It has it in e-mail. But what good is that when 9 out of 10 people use web based e-mail? When all you want to do is scan your machine avast will not "look" for certain behaviors. That's because it doesn't use heuristics when scanning files on your computer. Without heuristics your computer could be infected and avast will not detect it.

"Perfect. Perfect. and just Perfect." I just bought this yesterday, and wow, it's perfect for me. I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, so I needed something light, and this is light but powerful. Fast, effective, attractive graphics, silent scanning. Perfect, BUY IT, and at least try it! Ummmm, nothing; hahaha zero cons Look, this is the best anti-virsus software out there; It's not as heavy as Norton, not as slow as Symantec. This is simple perfect, it's attractive graphics, silent scanning, ahhh no more words, just try it. Awsome!

"So far no problems, used it about two months now!" I would recommend to anyone, very easy to use and understand! Would like to not have to update every 30 days for the free version. Be nice if it went to 60 days or longer. Oh well, better than nothing, right!

I am very happy indeed with this program - it updates the virus database via my slow modem line and doesn't hammer my old windows 2000 machine every time you open a file. It found some viruses which had been on the computer for some time before I installed it, and has since detected others trying to sneak onto the system.... so I went pro, which is good value.

The Best! Reliable! A serious and trustworthy company behind the product named Alwil. None that I know of. Since version 5 Avast also officially uses heuristic technology (behavioral shield)! Well I have been using Avast for nearly five years and it is the best. It has a lot of features and a good detection rate and is the only antivirus that I really trust. Install Avast and your PC will be like a safe.Bjorn Lundahl,Gothenburg, Sweden

Looks good, scans well. Firewall didn't function. The 'FIX NOW' and 'TURN ON' features were impotent. Customer support suggestions useless. They did, however happily, refund payment.
